Cape Town — A South African man living in Ireland was interviewed by Irish media who were looking for an alleged “asylum seeker” looking to make Ireland their new home.
Virgin Media, an Irish media publication, interviewed several alleged migrants who lived along Dublin’s Grand Canal, who were removed from living there after officials considered the camp to be a health risk. There were more than 100 makeshift shelters that were housing asylum seekers hoping to make Ireland their new home, The Citizen reported.
One of the “asylum seekers” interviewed was a South African man named Brian, who was staying at the camp while his application was being processed. He explained that he moved to Ireland because there was no protection in South Africa and came to make a better life for his family.
“Look, I know what the situation is especially with the influx of people in the country, but some sort of communication would make me feel a lot better that someone has heard my story and has got my application,” he said.
“There is just no protection [in South Africa]. The government are not governing. Police are not policing. I don’t know why they still have jobs. So many crimes happen on a daily basis. It’s not just holding someone at knifepoint, people are getting shot and killed,” he added.
Brian’s message received some mixed responses to the post on X. Some said he was “an economic migrant masquerading as an asylum seeker”.
Another said he was not a refugee and should be deported immediately so that he can re-apply the proper way.
Virgin media spoke to Brian from South Africa (safe country) who claimed asylum so he could “provide a better life for his family back home” (economic migrant)
