Cape Town – Shops in the Durban central business district were reportedly looted just hours after midnight on Friday, the same day as the planned National Shutdown over food and petrol price hikes.
According to IOL, the looting came after reports of a possible national shutdown became a subject of interest on Thursday.
Many took to social media calling for ordinary people to take to the streets in protest against the ever-rising food and fuel prices.

The call seemed to have not materialised, as many people went about their day as normal.
A few shops were, however, looted.
Indications were that the looting was carried out by opportunists and was possibly not related to the national shutdown.
Videos of the looting were widely shared on social media.
