Cape Town – A KwaZulu-Natal Grade 10 learner at Northbury Park Secondary School allegedly set alight the acting principal’s car after his cellphone was confiscated, reports said.
A video of the incident has been circulating on social media.
The video shows the car in the school’s parking area with smoke coming out, as three people try to douse the fire with water while another uses what looks like a fire extinguisher.
Shocked learners can be heard in the background, while others are seen running along with teachers to see what is happening.
The learner was allegedly reprimanded by the teacher for carrying a cellphone to school.
The pupil then left the school, only to return with petrol which he used to start the fire, reported The South African.
The school’s security guard and a teacher tried to put out the fire but the damage was already done to the vehicle, the report said.
KZN education department has condemned the incident and has announced that it will be visiting the school to address the issue, reported TimesLIVE.
The department’s spokesperson, Kwazi Mthethwa said they were “shocked and disappoineted” by the incident.
“We condemn this barbaric act. I have just spoken to the district director who will visit the school on Thursday morning to address the matter,” the report quoted Mthethwa as saying.
