Cape Town – A refuse compactor truck fell into a sinkhole in Cape Town after a section of a road collapsed on Monday.
The incident occurred in Lavender Hill, and the road had no visible signs of damage before the collapse.
According to News24, a woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The City of Cape Town initiated a retrieval operation, deploying personnel and a tow truck to recover the fallen truck.
The affected area was cordoned off for safety, and officials were working to ensure the area’s structural safety before conducting an assessment to determine the cause of the incident, which could include a sewer collapse.

Zahid Badroodien, the MMC for water and sanitation, said that the reason behind the incident was being investigated. Nevertheless, there were no apparent surface indications of road damage, Times Live reported.
“The affected area has been cordoned off for safety reasons. The main priority at this stage is to ensure the area is structurally safe to recover the vehicle and then the necessary assessment of the area can be done to determine the cause of the incident, among which is a sewer collapse,” the report quoted Badroodien as saying.
