Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa informed Parliament on Thursday that he has received a report from Minister of Justice Thembi Simelane concerning her dealings with VBS Mutual Bank.
This came in response to opposition pressure to address the R500,000 loan she received from the now-defunct bank.
Although Simelane claims to have repaid the loan, MPs remain unsatisfied with her explanation, raising concerns about her ethical conduct.
Ramaphosa said he is considering the matter, citing the Executive Members’ Ethics Act, which mandates ethical behaviour by cabinet members.
“That is a matter that I am giving consideration to,”Ramaphosa commented on the possibility of the minister’s removal.
Calls for Simelane’s removal and transparency in the ANC’s Integrity Commission review have intensified.
