Cape Town – Durban metro police have warned against the misuse of fireworks after midnight, as city bylaws permit their use only within 15 minutes before and after midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Violators can face fines of R2,500.
“If you use fireworks after that it will be against the law. If the police find you, you will be prosecuted and a fine of R2,500 can be issued,” Spokesperson Col Boysie Zungu said during an interview with Newzroom Afrika.
Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu has issued a stern warning to the public against the use of fireworks before 11:45PM and after 00:15AM, as per city bylaws. He says those in breach of this may face prosecution and a fine of R2500.

According to Times Live, The police emphasised the health and safety risks, particularly to animals, with complaints of dogs running away and people using fireworks unsafely.
Police advised pet owners to keep their animals safe.
Similarly, Johannesburg metro police have set rules, including fireworks use only between 11pm and 1am and restrictions near sensitive areas.
Non-compliance in Johannesburg can result in fines ranging from R1,000 to R1,500.
