Cape Town — The South African Police Services (SAPS) in the North West have condemned an incident involving an off-duty police officer assaulting a member of the public outside the Rustenburg police station.
In a statement, police revealed that the occurrence happened in a barber shop at one of the malls in Rustenburg, involving a police officer, the assault victim and others. The incident happened this past weekend.
” Following the incident, one of the victims went to the police station to complain. Reports suggest that the police officer also went to the police station where he found the complainant in the parking area. Allegedly, he chased the complainant inside the police station premises and assaulted him. The on-duty police officers swiftly intervened and calmed the situation,” police spokesperson, Sam Tselanyane said.
The victim consequently opened a case of assault against the member, who laid a counter-charge of assault. An investigation into the matter is currently underway.
“Provincial police management pointed out that the member’s conduct is totally unacceptable and displays a total disrespect for the rule of law by a law enforcement officer,” Tselanyane concluded.
