Cape Town – Police in KwaZulu-Natal are reportedly investigating four counts of murder following the death of four people during a shooting incident at the KwaMashu men’s hostel on Wednesday.
Reports alleged that 20 armed men stormed into the hostel and reportedly opened fire on the victims.
Four of the victims died on the scene while another died at a local clinic, reports said.
The police confirmed the incident, adding that five more people sustained gunshot wounds, reported SABC News.
According to police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, no arrests have been made but police are following several leads, the report said.
“Although the motive has not been concluded upon. The ongoing hit-men squabbles could not be ruled out. However, our leads will indicate which way to go and we’re hopeful that we crack this case and find the motive of these killings. Suspects are heavily armed, so, we’re also having a team that is equal to the task,” the report quoted Netshiunda as saying.
Initial investigations revealed that the armed assailants were hitmen and police were investigating cases of murder and attempted murder, reported TimesLIVE.
Councillor Mzethu Gwala said shooting incidents in the area were not uncommon, adding that on Saturday night, two people were killed in a shooting.
He said that the issue was made worse by community members not sharing information with the police due to trust issues and the police not having the capacity to police the area.
EWN reported that detectives were questioning witnesses and hoped to make a breakthrough.
“Our investigators are on the ground are tracking and tracing the suspects and searching for possible leads that could lead us to the whereabouts of the suspects. We are hopeful we will make a breakthrough because we are talking to several people who have witnessed the tragedy,” the report quoted the police as saying.
