Cape Town – International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor has called upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials implicated in civilian casualties in Palestine.
Pandor criticised the ICC’s swift action against Russian President Vladimir Putin for alleged war crimes in Ukraine but noted its silence regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, SABC reported.
She made these remarks during a lecture at the University of Johannesburg in remembrance of the slain Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh.
“In memory of Shireen Abu Akleh, we all continue to call on the ICC to prosecute these war crimes and issue arrest warrants for those leaders in Israel who have ordered and presided over these crimes.
“The slowest to investigate and prosecute those responsible for these war crimes necessitates greater mobilisation among youth and civil societies around the globe to ensure that justice for Palestinians is realised.”
Meanwhile, concerns linger over humanitarian access to Gaza as Israel closed two vital entry points.
Despite the reopening of one crossing by the Israel Defence Force following a Hamas attack, the closure of Rafah raises significant challenges for humanitarian operations.
