Cape Town – Political parties in Parliament have expressed mixed reactions to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address (Sona).
Some critics dismissed his speech as wishful thinking, accusing him of making unfulfilled promises, particularly on job creation while the economy faces de-industrialisation.
“There is no plan or accountability. He uses this platform to waffle. He says he will create jobs, but he does not say where or how. He says he will develop infrastructure, but where and how. There is no plan, only utterances to pass the time.
“He knows he will not be challenged on it by those he is in coalition with,” EFF leader Julius Malema said.

Meanwhile, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba criticised Ramaphosa’s Sona, calling it out of touch with the realities faced by South Africans.
Mashaba argued that Ramaphosa should have sought advice before making unrealistic promises.
“For South Africa to actually turn the tide of high unemployment, we need a minimum of 5% [economic growth]. Anything under 5%, you are not going to reverse the current high unemployment rate. A minimum of 5% doesn’t happen just because you go to church, it happens after identifying ways of creating employment,” he said.
He added: “As a country, we are sitting with factories that are vandalised and laying empty. I started manufacturing hair products in 1985 in Ga-Rankuwa. That industrial area was world-class, but go look at it now – it has been vandalised.”
