Cape Town — Former South African Broadcasting Channel (SABC) Chief Operating Officer (COO) and founder of the African Content Movement (ACM), Hlaudi Motsoneng, has proposed a wage minimum for cleaners and security guards.
Motsoneng had social media buzzing when he appeared on an interview with Kaya959 and said that R10 000 as a monthly salary was too little and said he would pay cleaners R15 000 per month. When asked what his minimum wage would be, he said it would be a “living wage”.
“You know how much you want for someone to live at home and look after their children. You can’t pay people R10 000 a month, That is me. Even a cleaner or a gardener.” he said.
He said he would pay a cleaner R15 000 per month, and added that these people are professionals, not just those working jobs such as doctors. When asked how he would ensure these workers get paid well, he said there are some things that he would not negotiate.
“If I were the president, it is going to happen. If I say these things are not assisting our people, I don’t negotiate, go and ask SABC they will tell you. I don’t negotiate,” he said.
According to The Citizen, Motsoneng believes social grants destroy people’s future, because they do not work and depend on government handouts, saying you cannot grow the economy with social grants.
