Cape Town — As the Joshlin Smith trial continues, state witness Lourencia Lombaard dropped a bombshell when she revealed she had lied to a police officer in her original statement.
Lombaard was back on the stand after her court case on Wednesday 19 March was cut short after she fell ill, adjourning proceedings until today.
She faced intense cross-examination from Fanie Harmse, Jacquin “Boeta” Appollis’ legal representative, IOL reported.
She was questioned over the legitimacy of the statement she gave to police following her arrest and she said she was interviewed by Captain Cilliers. She claimed that she did not fully trust Cillers and had reservations about her. When asked why she spoke to her, she said she wasn’t aware he would be speaking to her.
“I didn’t know she was going to come to me. I just spoke. I didn’t know if I could tell people what happened,” she told Judge Erasmus.
Lourentia Lombaard, the state’s key witness in Joshlin Smith’s trial, has admitted to lying in some of the statements she gave to the police. The state continued to poke holes in the statement provided by Lombard. Newzroom Afrika’s @Nasiphi_Same has the latest.

“Did you lie to Captain Cilliers?” Judge Erasmus asked.
“Yes,” Lombaard responded.
Harmse also questioned the alleged contradiction in Lombaard’s confession and asked why she initially said Kelly and Joshlin walked to the car, but months later said it was Kelly and Boeta.
“Ek was deurmekaar, my Lord (I was confused my Lord)” Lombaard said in response.
