Cape Town – Former president Jacob Zuma is appearing in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday for a pretrial hearing related to the arms deal corruption case.
Zuma is set to request the removal of prosecutor Billy Downer.
Despite the former president being declared trial-ready three years ago, his trial has faced delays due to his repeated appeals and efforts to remove Downer, who he accuses of bias.
Judge Nkosinathi Chili previously dismissed Zuma’s application to remove Downer, but Zuma’s legal team is seeking permission to appeal this decision, potentially causing further delays.
Zuma also faces an ongoing private prosecution case against Downer and journalist Karyn Maughan, which has been criticized as part of a strategy to delay his arms deal corruption trial.
