Cape Town – In a solemn gathering at Grace Bible Church’s Carletonville branch on Tuesday, mourners gathered to honour the 11 children who tragically lost their lives in a devastating accident a week ago.
The children, aged between 7 and 13, were killed when a minibus taking them to school near Johannesburg overturned and burst into flames after being hit by another vehicle, authorities said.
The driver of the minibus was also killed and seven other children were rushed to hospital, according to officials in Johannesburg’s Gauteng province.
Television images showed that the minibus was destroyed by the fire in the early morning crash in Merafong, more than 70 kilometres (45 miles) west of the city.
Charred schoolbook pages were scattered on the tarmac, as police examined the scene.
According to Times Live, emotional scenes unfolded as families, joined by community members and officials, paid tribute at a memorial service on Tuesday.
