Cape town – Watch this video of Botswana’s former president Ian Khama as he speaks about his father Sir Seretse Khama.
“There are quite a lot of memorable things that I could relate. Maybe the earliest ones…. even though I was still very young… I have a couple of snippets when I was in the UK… I was born there and spent the first three years of my life there.
“I have occasional flashbacks of that time when I was with him… I just remember him from the point of view of his presence, his background, the supportive nature that he was of us having to live in the UK,” says Khama.
Khama was speaking as the southern African country ended the Sir Seretse Khama celebratory month.
Every year, on July 1, the country celebrates the life of Sir Seretse Khama, as it is the anniversary of his birthday. The day is one of the country’s public holidays.
Sir Seretse Khama led Botswana to independence from British colonial rule and became the country’s first head of state in 1966.
According to media reports, he is best remembered for his commitment to the principles of democracy, self-resilience, development, and national unity.
He died on July 13, 1980, at the age of 59.
Ian Khama himself became Botswana’s fourth president in 2008, serving for two terms.
