Cape Town – Eight Nigerian nationals have been charged with malicious injury to property, assault, and public violence after attacking Kimberley Police Station and officers, along with damaging vehicles.
Onogu Nwaemeka, Kelecho Oken, Ebot Kennedy, Chijioke Steven, Charles Aknaji, Umemba Sophuru, Amajoyi Tochukwu, and Charles Okerie Onyedikashi appeared in the Kimberley District Court on Monday.
The incident occurred following the arrest of one of their fellow countrymen, prompting retaliation demands for his release, said Saps Northern Cape provincial spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers.
Chaos erupted as the police attempted to contain the situation, leading to rubber bullets being fired to disperse the crowd.
One suspect was apprehended for drug possession, while three others were arrested for public violence.
Additional threats and acts of violence ensued, resulting in further arrests.
Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola condemned the behaviour, vowing to uphold law and order in the Northern Cape province.
The accused have been remanded until their next court appearance.
