Cape Town – Drugs, cellphones, smart watches and self-made weapons were reportedly some of the contraband seized during a raid at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre in Cape Town on Wednesday.
According to reports, the search and seize operation was conducted by Correctional Services officials together with members of the Anti-Gang Unit and Crime Intelligence.
Speakingto Newzroom Africa, National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale said that the operation was part of their work to rid their facilities of contrabands.
He further explained how the contraband made their way inside correctional facilities via correctional services corrupt officials or smuggled by detainees who get to leave the facility to appear in court.
Cellphones, chargers, sharp objects, drugs and dagga were some of the confiscated items during the raid.
The raid saw 466 recruits participate in the raid as part of their practical training, News24 reported.
The report said more than 300 cellphones were confiscated along with 21 dagga pipes, a Wi-Fi router, three smart watches and three packets of tik.
According to SABC News inmates found with contraband items faced additional charges and disciplinary action.
“Illegal substances have to be reported to police so there’ll be another case, with a further charge. But apart from that we’ve got a disciplinary code inside correctional services and there are privileges that will be withheld from that kind of an offender” the report quoted Thobakgale as saying.
