Cape Town – Twitter users have labelled as “disgusting’ and ‘shocking”, the actions of a man who was caught slapping a woman in the street after a video of the incident made its rounds on social media.
In the video of 19 seconds, taken by people standing on a balcony in a complex close by, the man can be seen repeatedly slapping the woman despite another woman’s attempts to intervene.
Cars can also be seen driving past while everything transpires. The fact that no cars stopped to assist the woman infuriated Twitter users.
Where the incident took place and the events leading up to the assault remain unclear.

Watch as this coward beats a lady in the street. He should be made famous and not show his filthy face in public again. This is absolutely disgraceful. Terrible that people just keep driving past. Who is he and where in South Africa did this happen? pic.twitter.com/tdLtqt6YU8

Action Society has called for a manhunt to locate the abuser caught on video. Action Centre coordinator at Action Society, Kaylynn Palm expressed concern about the lack of people who stand up when they see a woman being abused.
“It is a terrible shame on everyone who sees a woman getting beat up and stands by, doing nothing,” Palm said.
“We can only win the fight against gender-based violence if people act against it,” she added.
“We call on the police to start a manhunt for this abuser and make an example of him,” said Palm. “We urge anyone with information to come forward and take a stand against gender-based violence. We will not stand for anyone using violence against a vulnerable person.”
According to Action SA, South Africa saw 40 469 reported cases of assault to do grievous bodily harm against women in 2022, up to September, an increase of about 16% from the previous year.
