Cape Town – Police Minister Bheki Cele has reiterated his worries regarding the abundant presence of alcohol outlets, saying that it is a contributing factor to elevated crime rates throughout the country.
Speaking at a Christmas Eve media briefing in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Sunday , Cele expressed concern about motorists driving under the influence during the festive season, with several fatalities reported on busy roads.
“While it is appreciated that the festive season is a time for enjoyment and festivities, it remains very alarming that some motorists still choose to drink and drive,” the minister said.

He said that since October 15, over 4,400 drunk drivers have been arrested, and 2,500 people were arrested for public drinking in the first 22 days of December.
Cele linked alcohol abuse to violence, saying that it is a “core driver” of crime, particularly contact crimes.
The minister warned unlicensed liquor outlets of closure and arrests for illegal alcohol sales, with more than 6,400 fines issued to non-compliant liquor outlets.
He called for responsible trading and compliance from liquor traders.
