Cape Town – A young boy is reported to have been sharing his room with a male black mamba before the venomous snake was retrieved by Snake Handler, Jason Arnold.
Arnold headed to the boy’s home in the Hillgrove area of Newlands on Friday morning after he was called about a large snake inside a pantry.
The family had sent him a picture of the snake. He could see it properly but thought it was probably going to be either a Mozambique spitting cobra or a black mamba.
Arnold detailed the incident on his YouTube channel, Jason Arnold – Snake Handler.
In the video on YouTube, the boy’s grandfather says they suspected the snake got into the house on Wednesday when the helper left the boy’s bedroom window open.
“So we only noticed something wrong yesterday, that was Thursday when my grandson’s things on this table were all on the floor,” the grandfather explained.
Then on Friday, a family member told the grandfather, she spotted something in front of the boy’s bedroom door and then again later thought she heard something rattling inside the pantry.
He said that he then slowly started removing things from the pantry and when he removed one of the items, he saw the snake coiled up in the corner and kept guard until Arnold arrived.
He said that while he was waiting for Arnold, he kept guard of the snake, even after Arnold arrived.
“It is a mamba,” Arnold said.
“Imagine having a mamba in your house for a few days without knowing.
“Just shows that they are not there to bite people. They are just there to do their thing and keep out of harm’s way and just do what they got to do to get food and water and shelter and avoid people at all costs,” Arnold explained.
He described the mamba as chilled while grabbing it with his tongs, secured it in his left hand and pulled it out of the pantry.
The snake was over 2 metres, a decent-sized male mamba, said Arnold.
