Cape Town – The Free State health department has criticised the actions of patients who were caught on social media picking up alcohol that had fallen from a jackknifed truck on the N8.
The patients were being transported from Dr JS Moroka Hospital to Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital for specialised care, Times Live reported.
The department of health expressed shock that individuals who were supposedly unwell would suddenly become well enough to collect alcoholic beverages from the road and load them into a state vehicle meant for patient transport.

“It is unimaginable that a person who is supposedly sick would suddenly be fit enough to pick up alcoholic beverages strewn on the road and, worst of all, have the audacity to load them into a state vehicle that is meant to ferry patients to a health facility,” the report quoted health department spokesperson Mondli Mvambi as saying.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver was focused on the traffic ahead while the vehicle was stopped due to the road closure caused by the jackknifed truck.
