Cape Town – At least five people were reportedly killed and several others sustained critical injuries in a horrible multi-vehicle crash on the N3 between Hilton and Cedara on Monday.
The road was reportedly closed off for hours before it was reopened just before mid night, reports said.
According to TimesLIVE, 41 vehicles were involved in the crash, including light motor vehicles and minibus taxis.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport Sipho Hlomuka commended the hard work by various emergency services.
“We acknowledge the magnitude of this horrific accident and the trauma felt by all those involved is unbearable,” the report quoted Hlomuka as saying.
The Department of Transport said that the road was opened after the recovery of the bodies of the deceased, assisting survivors on scene and transporting critical patients to healthcare facilities for urgent medical attention, the report said.
Provincial spokesperson for the department Kwanele Ncalane said various agencies were on the scene and an investigation into the cause of the accident was ongoing, reported IOL.
“The preliminary investigations suggest at least five people have lost their lives and scores sustained injuries during this horrific crash. This accident involves five trucks, eight minibus taxis and 22 light motor vehicles,” the report quoted Ncalane as saying.
Motorists are advised to keep their vehicle lights on and keep a safe following distance, said the report.
