Cape Town – Police Minister Bheki Cele has reportedly revealed that at least 137 bullet cartridges were found at the Soweto tavern where 15 people were murdered during a mass shooting on Sunday.
The bullet cartridges included that of a AK-47 and 9mm pistols, he said in an interview with SABC News.
This was after Cele received the incident briefing from Orlando East police while visiting the crime scene on Monday, reported TimesLive.
He announced that an 11-member detective team was investigating the murders and engaging community members about their concerns about crime in the area of Diepkloof and Orlando, the report said.
eNCA reported that the police were on the hunt for five instead of two suspects as initially reported.
“It is reported that on July 10, a group of men armed with rifles and 9mm pistols entered the tavern and started shooting randomly at the patrons who were sitting inside. Twenty-three people were shot, 12 of whom were declared dead on the scene, while 11 were rushed to a nearby hospital. Two more were later declared dead at the hospital,” IOL quoted police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello as saying.
The report said another death was reported, bringing the death toll of the mass shoot at the Mdlalose tavern to 15.
The Mdlalose tavern massacre was one of three tavern shootings reported over the weekend, where 21 people were killed, the report said.
Four people were killed in a shooting at the Samkelisiwe tavern in Pietermaritzburg while another two were killed at Mputlane Inn tavern in Katlehong on Friday.
