Cape Town – A nine-year-old boy died and his mother is in critical condition following a shooting outside the Turkish Mosque in Midrand, Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a statement by Netcare911, the woman was sitting in her car with her two children – a 9-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl – when their vehicle came under fire with a hail of bullets.
The incident occurred at around 15:00.
“The mother, believed to be in her mid-thirties sustained two gunshot wounds to her body and was found in a critical condition.
The young boy who had been sitting in the front passenger seat had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest. The daughter, aged 13 who had been sitting in the back seat was not injured,” the statement said.
The boy was rushed to a nearby clinic but was declared dead on arrival by paramedics.
“The mother was treated on scene by Netcare 911 emergency care practitioners who managed to stabilise her,” said the statement.
She was flown to a specialist medical facility due to the serious nature of her injuries.
According to TimesLIVE, the motive for the shooting remained unknown and a case of murder and attempted murder had since been opened.
Police asked anyone with information that might help in the investigation to call the nearest police station or crime stop number 08600 10111.
