Kwazulu-Natal — A 70-year-old man from Phoenix was left shocked after he drove into a poorly marked construction hole in Umbilo, Durban, during the early hours of Friday morning.
TimesLIVE reported that Gilbert Annamalai said that the hole “came out of nowhere”.
He was on his way back home after dropping his wife off at King Edward Hospital for treatment.
The report said that Annamalai’s son-in-law Reuben Francis said there was nothing to indicate that there had been a construction site a bit further down the road.
“It was quite dark at the time and there were no clear early warning or signs to say there was construction ahead. The lane suddenly went straight into the hole. To make matters worse, the hole is filled with raw sewage,” he was quoted as saying.
The reports said that paramedics often encountered similar scenes.

In February, SowetanLIVE reported that a baby was found in a shallow hole on a construction site in Port Shepstone, on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.
“At about midday, Mi7’s emergency medical services was dispatched after reports that a newborn baby was found abandoned at a construction site in Port Shepstone.
“Mi7 medics arrived to find the baby, believed to be only a few hours old, in a hypothermic state. Medics worked quickly to stabilise the infant before transporting it to a hospital for further care,” Mi7 National Group director Colin David said.
