Johannesburg — Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) are currently investigating the cause of a fire that hit the Johannesburg CBD, causing extensive damage to at least 12 shops.
It is reported that the blaze broke out on Sunday at the corner of Jeppe of Goud streets in Joubert Park.
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson, Xolile Khumalo, said firemen responded swiftly to the incident and managed to contain the blaze within a few hours, The Citizen reported.
“12 Small shops were gutted by fire on the corner of Jeppe and Goud Street. No injuries were sustained. The cause is under investigation by EMS Fire Inspectors. EMS continues to implore warehouse, shop owners and residents to always be extra cautious,” Khumalo said.

According to Arrive Alive, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation and EMS has urged all warehouse and shop owners to exercise caution and make sure that all electrical appliances are turned off after use to prevent any electrical fires.
This follows another incident of a fire that broke out at a Pretoria scrapyard, which destroyed more than a dozen cars.
The blaze broke out on Saturday afternoon around 3pm and teams from multiple fire stations were deployed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found that several vehicles in a scrapyard were on fire. They immediately began with firefighting operations and stopped the fire from spreading to a nearby factory,” City of Tshwane Emergency Services said.
The fire was extinguished within two hours and no injuries were reported on the scene.
