Cape Town – The arrest warrant for the Fees Must Fall activist and one of the so-called alleged instigators of the July unrest, Bonginkosi Khanyile was reportedly withdrawn on Friday after he produced a medical certificate explaining his no-show in court last week.
Khanyile was arrested in August in connection with the July riots that left at least 354 dead in parts of South Africa. He was released on a R5 000 bail.
Khanyile, 31, faces charges of incitement to commit public violence and contravention of the Disaster Management Act.
The Hawks previously showed the court three videos of Khanyile allegedly inciting public violence.
In one of them, he was shown encouraging people in a Shoprite store to continue looting and rioting until the former president Jacob Zuma was released from jail, according to The Citizen.
He had been scheduled to appear in court on Monday, December 13, but he was a no-show, with his lawyer saying he was unable to get hold of him.

The court was compelled to issue a warrant of arrest for the activist until he presented a valid reason for his absence at his hearing.
On Friday, according to IOL, Khanyile gave the court a medical certificate that explained that he was sick, hence he couldn’t pitch up in court as scheduled.
“This was accepted by the court and the matter was postponed to 8 February 2022 for a pre-trial conference,” the report quoted the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal Natasha Ramkisson Kara as saying.
Khanyile’s case was adjourned to February 8, 2022 for a pre-trial conference.
