Cape Town – The Gauteng Education Department is investigating a violent altercation between a teacher and a grade 9 student at Glenvista High School, captured in a widely circulated video.
The incident on May 2, 2024 shows both parties engaged in physical confrontation, damaging school property.
Spokesperson for the Gauteng Education Department, Steve Mabona, said that MEC Matome Chiloane’s was concerned about the incident that gained viral attention on Friday.
The department vowed to address the matter decisively.

“A video of the incident was captured. The Gauteng Department of Education has since launched an investigation. The MEC has indicated that he takes the matter seriously,” EWN quoted Mabona as saying.
Meanwhile, according to The Citizen, education activist Hendrick Makaneta emphasised the need for enhanced mental health support in schools to tackle rising violence levels, attributing such incidents to underlying societal and systemic challenges like poverty and unemployment.
