Cape Town – Shoppers are reportedly being cautioned about potential thieves targeting them as they enter the restrooms of a major city mall, the Canal Walk in Cape Town.
The Milnerton Community Policing Forum (CPF) posted a Facebook statement regarding seven reported robberies at the mall.
The CPF said the thieves targeted individuals entering the mall’s toilets.
In one case, a victim was robbed after a suspect pretended to fall, leading the victim to assist and become a target.
The CPF initially reported a warning from a member of the public whose cellphone was stolen, but later said that they couldn’t verify the information.
“We are unable to verify his version of events but are aware that a number of phones have been stolen at the mall.
“In another incident, a minor was pick pocketed at the Games Arcade recently and lost his brand new phone,” the CPF said in a statement.
The CPF urged people to be vigilant, and the Milnerton SAPS announced plans to increase police presence at the mall during the festive season. The mall’s marketing manager denied knowledge of the reported incidents.
According to IOL, the mall’s marketing manager denied knowledge of the reported incidents.
Additionally, this follows a recent heist at Canal Walk on December 6, where thieves stole IT equipment, including 16 Apple MacBooks, in less than six minutes, the report said.
No arrests have been made in connection with the heist, and the investigation is ongoing.
