Cape Town – A victim of an attack by eight Presidential Protection Services police officers in July plans to claim R1.15 million in damages from the South African Police Service, a report says.
According to News24, Action Society, a lobby group, is helping the victim file a civil claim against Police Minister Bheki Cele and Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
“The driver has given us the mandate to represent him for this civil case, and we will also be doing oversight on his behalf for the criminal matter against the several policemen.
“We are in constant contact with IPID [Independent Policing Investigative Directorate], also with the internal inspectorate of the police, and on the criminal matter side, we are pushing for the investigation to be done properly,” the report quoted Action Society director of community safety Ian Cameron as saying.

The claim includes past medical expenses of R50 000, future medical costs of R100 000, and general damages of R1 million for various forms of suffering and trauma.
The officers face multiple charges, including assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless driving, and obstruction of justice. Action Society is also pushing for a proper investigation into the criminal matter.
Court papers are expected to be served to Cele and Masemola in the coming days. The case is scheduled for further investigation on November 9th, and both Cele and Masemola have been contacted for comment.
