Durban – A group of senior citizens came together bravely to apprehend two men who were part of a three-man crew that attempted an armed robbery on a Post Office in Lamontville on Wednesday.
According to a statement by the South African Police Service (SAPS), It is alleged that the three armed men entered the Post Office and held up the staff in full view of pensioners.
SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said that pensioners were standing in line to receive their pensions.
“There were about 200 elderly people who waited patiently for their pension pay-outs when the gunmen entered and held the staff. At gunpoint, they forced the manager and staff to open the safe and they stole two bags containing cash,” the Lieutenant said.

A group of brave senior citizens gathered and chased the suspects, managing to apprehend two men. According to Police, the suspect who was carrying cash and a firearm managed to flee the scene into the bushes. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.
The suspects aged 26 and 28 were placed under arrest and will appear before the Durban Magistrates Court on Friday, on charges of business robbery.
