Cape Town – The father of former rugby player Lukas van Biljon has tragically succumbed to his injuries following an assault by six armed men at the family farm in the Free State last week.
Two men arrested in connection with the robbery now face a murder charge.
During the attack, Lukas, 47, was stabbed several times. His 70-year-old father, André van Biljon, was shot and wounded.
According to Times Live, Free State police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle confirmed a murder charge had been added after 70-year-old André van Biljon died of his injuries.
“The one count of attempted murder has been changed to murder,” the report quoted her as saying.
The suspects, Khanye Muthi and Latin Mofokeng, appeared in court and their case was postponed for a bail application. They will remain in custody until their next appearance.
André was a train driver and had been helping his son on the farm the last few years, News24 cited Netwerk24 as saying.
Tributes for André have been pouring in on social media.
