Cape Town – Two police officers from the Pienaar police station in Mpumalanga appeared in the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after they allegedly demanded R10 000 from a suspect arrested for drunk driving.
According to a police statement, Sergeant Ngwazi Agrippa Ngwanyama, 48, and Sergeant Isaack Victor Sambo, 39, arrested a suspect for drunk driving on September 26, 2021.
The suspect had already been granted free bail by the police station when the duo took advantage of him by demanding R10 000 in order for him to be released.
“The alleged suspect phoned his girlfriend who managed to raise R2 000 and deposited the money into his account. The two police officials took him along in a police vehicle to a mall to withdraw the cash. He was also ordered to pay back the airtime voucher that he used to call his girlfriend,” said the police in a statement.
The suspect reported the incident to Hawks, who conducted an investigation that resulted in the arrest of both officers.
The two were released on bail of R2 000 each.
They are expected to appear at the Nelspruit Serious Commercial Crime Court on July 4, 2022.
