Cape Town — Two police officers from the Alexandra police station in Johannesburg are receiving medical treatment after they were shot inside the station.
Deputy Provincial Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, said the shootout left the two cops needing medical care, while the suspect died during the shootout, The Citizen reported.
Kekana said the suspect had entered the station around 10am requesting assistance. He was directed to be seated when he approached an officer behind a desk, who was writing up a statement, grabbed his firearm and started shooting. Kekana said the officer was not dressed in uniform.
“He grabbed that firearm and started shooting randomly. And, during that situation, unfortunately, he shot one sergeant, a 46-year-old man, and a constable, a 27-year-old man,” he said.

The suspect continued to shoot people as police chased after him, and in the chase, he was fatally wounded.
Kekana confirmed that the two officers were shot in their right shoulders and remain in stable condition.
The officers who witnessed the incident are said to be receiving counselling as well.
“As we speak, our members are receiving counselling. Our social workers have circulated from the police and were mobilised. They are currently busy attending to all the members, including those who were not in the centre,” Kekana added.
As reported by Newzroom Afrika, the police station has now become a crime scene and this incident has proven that police are not safe.
“This is an unfortunate incident. We shouldn’t have this and I believe the management of the police will look into the safety of the CFC and the police stations around because people sometimes just go to the police stations and sit, we don’t even know the intentions,” a police spokesperson said.
He added that the police were now hoping to determine the motive whether the suspect was in the right frame of mind and what led to the altercation.
“Police could not let the matter [be] the way it is and not contain it. It is unfortunate that in their way of containing it, one life is lost,” he added.
