Tunis – Tunisia’s president Kais Saied will attend a joint European-African summit in Brussels this week, his office said Wednesday, his first trip overseas since a July power grab.
As well as attending the two-day summit starting Thursday, Saied would meet “European and African leaders and senior officials from the European Union and the African Union”, his office said in a statement.

Saied on July 25 last year sacked the government, suspended parliament and seized wide-ranging powers, later moving to rule by decree, sparking fears for democracy in the birthplace of the Arab Spring uprisings.
His visit to Brussels follows a renewed wave of western criticism after he dissolved a key judicial watchdog and cemented his control over the courts.
