Cape Town – A truck driver in Mpumalanga, who claimed to have been hijacked and kidnapped in October, has been arrested for allegedly faking the incident.
Nkosana Glen Mathebula, faces charges of perjury, trespassing, theft of diesel, and defeating the ends of justice.
The 37-year-old appeared in court on Monday, and the case was postponed for further investigation, police spokesperson Brig Selvy Mohlala said.
The police discovered that Mathebula’s hijacking report was false after conducting a thorough investigation.
The Mpumalanga police commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela commended the investigators and warned against reporting false cases, as it diverts police resources from genuine needs.
“Community members are urged not to report false cases as police will redirect resources of the state to the wrong place instead of assisting those who are really in need of services,” said Manamela.
