Cape Town – A 29-year-old man travelling from Brazil was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng after customs officers discovered cocaine valued at R2.15 million in his bag, police said on Sunday.
The Department of Home Affairs had refused him entry into the country, leading to the search.
The drugs, weighing 8.6kg and soaked and dried into a rug, were seized, and the man was immediately arrested.
“It is alleged that the suspect was travelling from Brazil to Johannesburg in South Africa and on arrival, he was escorted to customs for processing after he had been refused entrance into the country by the department of home affairs.

“His bag was searched by customs officers and they found cocaine soaked and dried into the traveller’s rug weighing 8.6kg worth approximately R2.15 million,” police spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase said.
