Cape Town – A Cape Town family is reeling in shock after a mother, father, their daughter and her boyfriend reportedly died in a car crash on the R44.
The tragic accident that claimed the lives of Eugene van Graan, his wife Elma, daughter Euodia and her boyfriend Ronwan Adams, happened on Saturday night between Somerset and Stellenbosch, IOL reported.
According to police spokesperson, Frederick van Wyk, three people died on the scene while the fourth died in hospital, the report said.
“A white Ford Figo was involved in an accident on the R44, close to the Mountain Breeze caravan park. Three people died on the scene and a fourth succumbed in hospital.
“The deceased were aged between 23 and 54, all of the Kylemore area just outside of Stellenbosch. All were occupants of the Figo and their vehicle was the only one involved in the accident.
Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the accident, Van Wyk said.
Raithby Primary School in Stellenbosch where Eugene was a principal announced the sad news and conveyed the school’s condolences in a Facebook post.
According to Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond, the department was informed of the “tragic and sad” accident and was providing counselling to the school.
“The WCED has visited the school and has arranged for one of the heads of department to act as principal in the interim.
“Our condolences to the family, friends and the school community for their tragic loss. Counselling support will be made available for learners tomorrow, upon their return to school for the fourth term,” said Hammond.
