Cape Town – A Cape Town traffic officer on duty sustained injuries after he was knocked down by a taxi driver who “refused to stop”at a check point.
The incident occurred in Philippi on Wednesday morning at the vehicle check point in Weltervreden.
According to a Facebook post by Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith the officer suffered injuries to his head and leg.
JP said the driver in a Toyota Avanza refused to stop and knocked over the officer before speeding off from the scene but was caught.
“Officers pursued the runaway vehicle into Philippi, and arrested the driver for multiple charges including reckless driving, failing to stop on command, failing to stop after an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of a dangerous weapon, and incidentally failing to have the correct permit in his possession while driving,” said Smith.
Smith said the disregard for the law and a lack of respect for authority was a growing concern and called for courts to make an example of perpetrators.
“I call upon our SAPS Investigating Officers to present a strong case docket to the National Prosecuting Authority, for the courts to then set an example against such criminal, cowardly acts against enforcement staff,” said Smith.
