Cape Town – A toddler reportedly died, while her mother remained in a critical condition after they were trampled by a giraffe in Kwazulu-Natal on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old mother and her 16-month-old baby were attacked by an adult giraffe at a game lodge in the Hluhluwe area, northern KwaZulu-Natal, said ArriveAlive.
The baby was rushed to a local doctor who pronounced the baby dead on arrival, while Netcare911 paramedics found the mother in critical condition.
“The mother was treated on scene, however, due to the nature of the patient’s injuries and distance to an appropriate hospital, a decision was made to activate the Netcare 911 Helicopter Air Ambulance to fly the patient to a specialist facility,” paramedics said.
Police were investigating the cause of the incident.

According to IOL, the mother was in the intensive care unit, after having suffered poly-traumatic injuries.
The report said that the mother lived in the area with her child and worked as a tour guide at the lodge.
This was not the first wild animal attack in the area. In August, an escaped white rhino attacked a woman in her yard.
The rhino was believed to be one of the two rhinos that escaped from the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park.
