Cape Town – Social media personality “Dr” Matthew Lani is facing charges of impersonating a medical doctor and is set to appear in the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old was arrested at Helen Joseph Provincial Hospital after security personnel spotted him making videos at the hospital.
Lani was seen wearing a surgical mask, a hoodie, and a stethoscope around his neck, posing as a qualified doctor. He had previously entered the hospital under false pretenses to create misleading content.
When apprehended, he attempted to escape through a bathroom window but was recaptured.
Another case of impersonation was reported in Thembisa, where he allegedly used a practicing doctor’s credentials to deceive hospital staff.
Videos of his arrest have gone viral on TikTok, where he had been posing as a doctor for some time.
