Brazzaville – An evangelical priest in the Republic of Congo has been arrested after allegedly slitting his son’s throat, a macabre killing that provoked a clash in which two other people were killed, police said on Friday.
The priest, identified as Pastor Galako, murdered his 21-year-old son in the town of Betou, in the north of the central African nation on Wednesday, according to a police officer who declined to be named.
Friends of the murdered boy attempted to take revenge but were stopped by the police.
Two people were shot dead and nine wounded in scuffles with the police, the police officer told AFP.
Two men who helped him commit the murder are also in custody, the police officer said.
The circumstances and motive behind the murder are unclear.
Locals interviewed by AFP said the priest had heard the voice of God urging him to commit a sacrifice in order to become a powerful man.
The Republic of Congo, also called Congo-Brazzaville to distinguish it from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, is a poor but oil-rich nation of five million people.
