Cape Town – One of the two men who allegedly pretended to be security guards and walked out of a bank with R3 million has been sentenced to 15 years in jail.
Welcome Marcus, 55 was sentenced by the Stilfontein regional court in North West for stealing R3 million at the Nedbank in Klerksdorp in 2018, police said.
According to Hawks provincial spokesperson, Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said Marcus and an accomplice were dressed in security uniforms when they went into a Nedbank branch.
They indicated that they were there to collect money, said Rikhotso.
“They then collected an amount of R3 million and left the bank. It was only after they had left that the bank officials realised that the pair were bogus security officials,” Rikhotso said in a statement.

The matter was reported to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (also known as the Hawks) and it was investigated by the organised crime investigation unit.
“The investigation led to the arrest of the pair in Johannesburg on May 13, 2018.
“They made their first appearance in court facing charges of theft and were each released on R30 000 bail. The case was later dropped against the second accused while Marcus made several court appearances until he was ultimately convicted,” Rikhotso said.
Provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in North West, Major General Patrick Mbotho saluted the investigation team “for their great work”.
