Kwazulu-Natal – A 32-year-old man was seriously injured after his bakkie, which had reportedly been travelling at high speed, collided with a bus on Old Main Road in Ottawa, KwaZulu-Natal early on Friday morning.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), passing motorists and residents of the area contacted RUSA to request assistance. When help came, the driver of the bakkie had been found to have serious injuries.
“On arrival, the driver of a grey Nissan Hardbody bakkie was found to have sustained serious injuries. His passenger fled the scene while being treated by Medics from a private ambulance service,” RUSA said.
The person driving the bus reported that the driver of the bakkie that he had collided with was travelling at high speeds.
“The driver of the bus informed Reaction Officers that the bakkie was travelling at a high rate of speed towards him when it veered into his lane and crashed into the side of his vehicle,” RUSA said.
“The bakkie spun several times before coming to a stop.
“The seriously injured man was stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance,” it added.
Statistics collected by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) showed that 2 241 motorists were arrested for among other things, drunken driving, high speed, driving without licenses, and violation of permits since the start of this year’s festive season.
“This comes as the country prepares for the second peak in traffic volumes on national roads this week as more travellers will be making their way to various destinations for Christmas holidays,” RTMC said.
