Cape Town – Former public protector Thuli Madonsela has expressed her condolences to the family of Katlego Mpholo, who was identified as the man found burnt in Thabo Bester’ prison cell, allowing the convict to escape in May last year.
Madonsela responded to a tweet from Batho Mpholo, Katlego’s father, in which he confirmed that Katlego’s body was set alight to help Bester escape.
She advised Katlego’s family to sue G4S, the private security company that managed the Mangaung Correctional Centre, from which Bester escaped last year.
“Heartfelt condolences to you and the family, sir. I suggest you immediately sue G4S, Bester and [Nandipha] Magudumana for millions in civil proceedings.
“It will bring justice faster and the burden of proof is lower. While there is a strong case for the theory that Thabo Bester was corruptly released and did not escape, there is adequate evidence to prove negligence which is sufficient for a delictual claim. This does not mean abandoning criminal charges #Justice4KatlegoBereng,” Madonsela said.

Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein on 3 May 2022 when he faked his death in a fire.
Katlego’s remains were identified after DNA results matched with his mother.
Speaking to eNCA on Sunday, the father of the deceased said they still had not been allowed access to their son’s remains “but as from tomorrow (Monday), we are going to be pushing for that”.
“Suing, yes, we are going to sue because we have been receiving calls from high-level legal teams who are willing to help us,” he said.
Mpholo asked Bester and his accomplice Dr Nandipha Magudumana to “repent and seek God”.
“I will not ask them what has happened. I will just ask them to repent and seek God because I cannot talk bad to them, I cannot talk bad about the situation. But they only have two choices; to repent from all these things they are doing, or to face the wrath of God. God will punish them if they do not repent because this is too much now,” he said during an interview with Newzroom Afrika.

Thabo Bester: Katlego Mpholo ‘had paraffin in his trachea’ – autopsy reveals
Cape Town – The autopsy report of Katlego Mpholo, the man whose burnt body was found in convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester’s prison cell, reportedly showed that he had paraffin in his trachea when he was set alight.
According to IOL, the autopsy report which was done on the charred body also showed that Katlego died due to blunt force trauma to the head and was already dead before the prison caught fire.
The autopsy report was conducted in May 2022.
“A skull fracture and associated intra-cranial haemorrhage, complicated by pressure effects on the brain.
“Extensive, post-mortem-burn wounds and charring of the whole body. There were signs of consistent with the use of an accelerant (Paraffin). On dissection of the larynx, a strong smell consistent with an accelerant,” the autopsy revealed,” revealed the autopsy, according to The Citizen.
Police confirmed over the weekend that after matching DNA tests with his mother, the burnt body in Bester’s cell was indeed that of 31-year-old Katlego.
Speaking to eNCA on Sunday, the father of the deceased, Batho Mpholo, said they still had not been allowed access to their son’s remains “but as from tomorrow (Monday), we are going to be pushing for that”.

Mpholo said he had not been following the Thabo Bester story.
“I only followed it when he was arrested in Tanzania. As to when they burned the body… I did not even think it would come this close to me,” he said.

Earlier, the 51-year-old father from Tembisa, east of Johannesburg told City Press that police told the family that his son had overdosed on drugs and collapsed in town in Bloemfontein and was taken to hospital where he died.
He said he did not believe there was any truth in what the police said.
Mpholo said about a week ago, Bloemfontein police called Katlego’s mother saying they would like to conduct a DNA test. However, they did not explain what the tests were for.
“After a few days, she got a call from Pretoria saying the test was not correctly conducted. Someone was sent from Pretoria to conduct the test [again] and the results came back positive.
“Even this time, they did not say much. It was only on Saturday when they called to say the person who was found in Bester’s cell was my son [that we knew what the DNA test was for],” the report quoted Mpholo as saying.
