Cape Town – Construction of Parliament’s interim home, a dome structure, has officially commenced in Cape Town.
The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) handed over the site to the contractor, with the project expected to be completed within 24 days.
“The Dome will serve as the temporal home for Parliament for the next 24 months, whilst Parliament is being rebuilt, following the fire that gutted it two years ago. The Dome will be set up at the Niewmeester Parking Site within the Parliamentary Precinct,” said the department in a statement.
The dome will serve as a temporary Parliament for the next two years while the original building, damaged by fire, is rebuilt.
Located at the Niewmeester Parking Site, the dome will be ready in time for the 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA).
The project, endorsed by National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson, aims to save costs on temporary accommodations.
Materials transported from Pretoria are being used under the oversight of DPWI’s architectural and construction teams, with progress updates promised until completion.
