Johannesburg — Tembisa residents remain deeply concerned over the deteriorating state of schools in the area, which they described as a “ticking time bomb”.
There was uproar in the area after a classroom roof collapsed at Umthambeka Primary School, injuring 18 pupils in the middle of their class. Residents were also upset over the state of the School of Specialisation, that was built in 2022, which has now been neglected with shattered windows and a collapsing and crumbling roof, EWN reported.
Old furniture could be seen scattered between classrooms, while a section of the roof was missing, leaving wooden panels exposed at the school.
Michael Motloung, a concerned teacher, the crumbling infrastructure not only posed a constant threat to teaching and learning – but also raised safety concerns for pupils.

“Learners would be running up and down looking for chairs because there’s not enough. You go to the toilets, there’s urine on the floor, the pipes are not working, the windows are broken, some of the class ceilings falling – it’s a disaster,” Motloung said.
Another EWN story reported that parents organised a demonstration at the school to demand accountability for the neglect.
“Our children are living in filth, more especially in the toilets and classrooms. It’s shocking for a School of Specialisation – it’s very shocking. Where are the funds? Who ate the funds? Why is it that people who are eating the school funds are not taken to task?”
