Cape Town – Nurses at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Durban reportedly asked a 17-year-old mother, Andiswa Hlongwane, to return a baby who they believed was mistakenly switched with another in the hospital nursery.
According to SABC a traumatized Hlongwane was allegedly asked to return with the baby six days after being discharged.
She was told that the baby she took home might not be hers.
DNA tests were conducted and it was confirmed that the baby was indeed not hers.
The staff informed Hlongwane that a baby had died in the hospital’s nursery and that they suspected it was hers.
However, no DNA tests were performed to confirm this.
The matter was being investigated by the KwaZulu-Natal health department, according to News24.
“This matter has been investigated and disciplinary measures taken against implicated staff members. The matter is being treated with due care, sensitivity and respect – particularly because both parents involved are under the age of 18,” the report quoted the department as saying in a statement.
