Cape Town – A 17-year-old boy was reportedly handed over to the police in Limpopo by his family after he allegedly killed an 85-year-old woman in Kuranta village.
This is after the police launched a manhunt following the murder of the elderly woman who was found with multiple stab wounds on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said: “It appeared the assailant(s) used a sharp object to kill the victim. Emergency services were called and the elderly woman was certified dead on the scene. She was identified as Maidi Puledi Malefofane aged 85.”
Following a plea by police for anyone with information to come forward, a family member of one of the suspects reportedly handed the teenager over to police.
According to News24, the relative took the teenager boy to police after they noticed that “something was amiss about him following the murder of their neighbour”.
The teenager would be dealt with in accordance with the Child Justice Act, the report quoted Brigadier Mojapelo as saying.
“We appreciate the conduct of the family member who brought the child to the police station as this will send a clear message that perpetrators of crime have to be subjected to the rule of law regardless of relationships and that offenders within our own families have to be reported to the police,” Provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said, as reported by IOL.
