Cape Town – A driver of a minibus taxi reportedly ran over five children on Tuesday in KwaZulu-Natal before fleeing the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind.
According to a statement by Arrive Alive, the incident happened in Waterloo between Isihlangu and Pricklepear Road.
The minors were reportedly playing on the road before the minibus collided into a wire fence.
“Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived on the scene at approximately 17:57. It was established that the white Toyota Siyaya ran over five (5) minors who were playing on the road before it collided into a wire fence. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot,” the statement said.
The injured children were privately transported to a medical facility.
A report by The Citizen said that the driver could face a fine of up to R36 000 and a nine-year prison sentence, or both, for failing to stop after being involved in an accident.
“The law in South Africa requires you to stop if you are involved in an accident where a person was injured or killed or suffers damage in respect of any property or animal.
“If you fail to do so, you could be liable to prosecution,” said the report.
